Euro

On 1 March 2002 the Euro banknotes and coins became legal tender throughout the 12 countries of the euro area. These 12 countries are Belgium, Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Finland, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Portugal, Netherlands and Ireland. Until 31 December 2002, Belgian national banknotes and coins can be exchanged into the euro at any Belgian bank. After the changeover period has ended, Belgian national banknotes can still be exchanged at the national central bank for a very long period of time.
